Building the national instrument Bandura with Ukrainian pupils
While Swiss schoolchildren can usually benefit from a wide range of leisure activities during the school holidays, or even go go traveling with their parents, this is practically inaccessible to those seeking protection from Ukraine. The aim of this project is to assemble kits for musical instruments that can be played.
Background
The neighbourhood centre aims to promote not only the Ukrainian language, but also culture as a whole. The national Ukrainian folk instrument is called Bandura and is essentially a lap-played, plucked dulcimer.
Instead of simply buying an instrument and then playing it, there is a much deeper connection when you can build it yourself under supervision. After building the instrument, the students have the opportunity to learn how to play the Bandura with a professional bandurist who has lived in Winterthur for years and directs several choirs.

Meaningful holiday occupation, musical and handicraft education
The students are supported in various ways: meaningful holiday activity, experience of an important aspect of Ukrainian culture, acquisition of handicraft skills, musical education.
Through the bandurist Svjatoslava Luchenko, there are connections to a Bandura manufacturer in the Ukraine, from whom technical know-how can be obtained. Kits are to be prepared so that the mechanically or manually demanding work processes are already completed.
Time required: approximately 2 weeks.
To ensure that not only the course participants benefit, an event with live Bandura music is planned at the end of the course, where the completed instruments will be on display.
Location and time will be published.
Status of the project
The project already exists as a concept. Realistically, it is planned for the summer school holidays in 2023.
A meeting with bandurist Svyatoslava Luchenko took place on 27 December 2022, during which the measurements her instrument were taken. Further clarifications regarding measurements for student instruments are in progress.
